i like the idea but think the editing on the smokey track lets it down,its a hard track to edit

You've got all the right ingredients for a tasty mashup cake here, but there's bits of shell in with the egg, lumps in your flour and it needs a bit longer in the oven.

In more useful terms, the Smokey loop in the first section sounds a bit awkward, and there are a few points where it feels like you're missing a beat. I don't know whether there are some beats lingering in your Smokie acapella too (I presume there's an acapella at work here from the echoing), but those sound distracting.

I do think this could be really good if cleaned up. Have you done this by looping parts of the original Tears of a Clown track? If so, I've got the instrumental if that's any help.

And Gav, thanks for your offer of the instrumental. Unfortunately, I don't have time to go back in and fix this one.

I just grabbed bits of the original Smokey song and looped it. There is also a diy pella of the Smokey layered on top in parts, as I was trying to pump up the vocal.

I know going into the bridge is a bit unsettling. Part of that signature riff is missing. It seemed the only way I could keep the overall timing with that transition.

My mashup results tend to vary because I'm using Ableton Live to pitch and tempo everything, create looped sequences etc. Then I dump everything into Logic 5.5 and edit in there by pushing and pulling the start and end points of regions, create additional loops and add effects.

I'm thinking I could probably get more consistent results if I were to arrange my tunes in Ableton. But, my time is so limited that I never get around to REALLY learning Live properly. "Maybe in '09" I keep saying to myself!

No worries - I know what it's like to be pushed for time. I had a quick play with Ableton Live a few months ago, but as a dedicated ACID users I couldn't make head nor tail of it. Rather than spend ages working out what it's capable of and how to get the best results I slinked back to ACID, which may be more limited but it is very easy to use.
